Artist Statement
My name is Autumn Baxley and I am an artist and art teacher based in Kennesaw Georgia. I am deeply passionate about art and I always have been. I quickly realized at a young age that art is my favorite subject and it is what I want to spend my time doing. I am drawn to the challenge, freedom, and reward that comes with being an artist. I love how I have the freedom to make every creative decision involved in the process of making an artwork. The challenge is created within myself and I can push myself as much or as little as I choose. What I enjoy the most about being an artist is the reward of admiring and reflecting on the finished piece.
I do not limit myself as an artist. I enjoy working with all types of media and look forward to the challenge that goes with learning a new one. I appreciate each type of media for its uniqueness and the ways in which each can be used differently.
When others see my artwork, I want them to be moved by the aesthetics. The process and the product go hand-in-hand, but the product is what you see. Without any context, I want my art to be aesthetically pleasing and awe inspiring. I do not want people to focus on the process as a story that lead to the product, but as time and effort that lead to the product. I want the product of my artwork to be able to stand alone and still draw the viewer in.

Teaching Philosophy
I realized at a young age how important creating art is to me. Growing up as a child with ADHD when I did not even know what ADHD was, was very difficult. Creating art was always incredibly freeing for me. I never struggled to maintain attention while in the art room and as I got older, I realized it was due to the amazing art teachers I had. I believe that teachers will always leave an impact on their students. Good or bad, they will impact each one of the students that enter their classroom. They have the ability to foster growth to student’s passions, or the ability to kill it. With the incredible number of students that a teacher will impact during the span of their career, it’s very sad for me to think about the number of teachers who leave a negative impact on their students.
I believe teachers should have that passion and drive to teach their subject area, but especially to connect with their students and to take advantage of every opportunity to make a positive impact on a child’s day and leave a positive impact that they will carry with them through life. My passion for art was grown out of the wonderful teachers I had. The positive impact they had in my life is something I continue to carry with me to this day. I do not expect every child who comes into my classroom to grow up to become an artist, but I do aspire to teach each one of my students how to create and be creative, how art can connect to their everyday life, and most importantly that they are incredible little humans who have the absolute ability to be great, and that no matter what, they matter to me and I care about them.
I strive to help students connect to the curriculum. Instead of delivering lectures and putting the sole responsibility on the students to remain engaged, I work towards developing the lessons in a way that will interest the students and keep them attentive.
